Tanker, trailer collusion claims lives in Niger

No fewer than 15 people are feared dead and properties worth millions of naira destroyed as tanker laden with diesel collided with a truck allegedly owned by Dangote Group at Enagi, the headquarters of Edati Local Government Area, along the Mokwa-Bida road Niger State on Sunday.

The incident which occurred on afternoon paralysed both social and economic activities in the area as many travelers were stranded on the road with heavy traffic. Aside loss of lives, the incident claimed properties, including buildings, electric poles and cables when the diesel tanker skidded off the road after being hit by the trailer and went into flames.

Eyewitness confirmed to Nigeria News Flight on phone that a yet to be ascertained number of persons along the busy community lost their lives while scores who sustained various degress of injuries were rushed to a nearby health facility.

“The diesel tanker driver maybe was trying to manoeuvre his way to avoid bad portion of the road or that the road is too narrow to accommodate them. As a result the trailer hit the body and it skidded off the road and fell by some shops and buildings”.

He further hinted that many people were caught up by the inferno, as people inside their shops and residential buildings also lost their lives.

Usman Baba, one of the residents of the affected community also said that they counted about four charred bodies as at Sunday evening with several others sustaining various degrees being rushed to nearby health facility.

Usman also explained that several cars and motorcycles were also destroyed by the inferno, which, according to him, raged for several hours before a combined team of fire service and Federal Road Safety Commission came to the scene.

Meanwhile, neither the Police nor FRSC has reacted to the incident at press time.
