The Niger State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has called on the state governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, to pay its members their gratuities, lamenting that many of them are dying of hunger because of the country’s harsh economy.

“A situation whereby retired civil servants who had served the state meritoriuously turn to beggars and not sure of where their next meal is coming from on a daily basis does not speak well of the state governent, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP),” the union said through its state Secretary, Comrade Abdullahi Baba Sani.

Sani, who spoke in Minna on Thursday, also commended the state government for paying 30 peercent to some retirees, while pleading with the governor to off-set the 70 percent balance and also attend to those who were yet to be captured.
