Boat mishap claims seven lives in Niger

Boat mishap has claimed no fewer than seven persons, including a man, his two wives, and a son in Zhigiri village, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

Though the total number of the occupants of the Dnaweto community bound boat was not known at press time, the incident occured on Sunday afternoon.

While police report on the incident is being awaited, the travellers were said to be going to Dnaweto community for a naming ceremony.

Meanwhile, residents of the area have solicited for the intervention of the HYPPADEC, Niger State government and wealthy individuals and corporate organisations to provide the communities with life jackets to avoid further loss of lives.

Salisu M Sabo (Esq), the spokesperson, Coalition of Shiroro Associations (COSA), in a statement, appealed to the HYPPADEC to provide safety measures such as life jackets to help the people to prevent the future deaths.

The coalition reminded HYPPADEC that it assisted Warra Community of Kebbi State with similar boat mishap that claimed several lives by

providing safety measures, while urging it to do the same to the affected communities in Niger State.

Our correspondent gathered that some corpses were yet to e recovered from the river as at the time of this report.
