How fire destroyed Mokwa market

Early morning hour fire has injured four persons and razed down half of Mokwa Central Market at the headquarters of Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.

The fire, which hit the market on Thursday, also destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

The victims, who are mostly traders and/or their apprentices who slept inside the shops, it was gathered, sustained various degrees of fire burns and were now responding to treatment at the Mokwa General Hospital.

The paramount ruler of the town, the Ndalile-Mokwa, Alhaji Mohammed Shaba, said that the inferno, which began at about 4am, destroyed more than half of the market, while appealing to the state government to aide the victims.

His words: “The fire started around 4 o’clock this (Thursday) morning. They called me and I called the Fire Service. They have been trying to put off the fire but because of lack of water tanks they couldn’t do much and as I am talking to you, the fire is still on”.
