How bandits abducted another Catholic priest in Niger

By Mohammed Usman

Bandits have struck again in Niger State, abducting a Catholic cleric, Rev. Fr. Leo Raphael Ozigi, and others, who were returning from church service in Munya Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

They also killed unspecified number of villagers, destroyed properties worth millions of naira and abducted many villagers.

The abduction of Rev. Ozigi came barely a year after the kidnap and murder of another Catholic priest in the area.

Ozigi and other clergy men were said to be on their way from Sarkin-Pawa, heading back to Gwada after conducting Sunday service but were intercepted by the terrorists operating along the corridors of Munya.

The Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State chapter, Dr Mathias Echioda, and state government officials have confirmed the abduction.

Echioda  said that Rev. Fr. Leo Ozigi and other clergy men were abducted along Sarkin-pawa-Gwada road. He also called for more security enforcement to end siege by terrorists.

Besides, Echioda solicited for intensified prayers by Nigerlites and Nigerians in general for an end to the bloodletting saying, “It is like this thing is getting out of hand, let us intensify prayers for God to intervene and bring the activities to the terror groups to an end”.

Nigeria News Flight however gathered that the terrorists numbering over 150 entered Niger State from Kaduna State through Jasso river linking the two states at Dangunu Ward in Munya Local Government Area and spread across Kuchi and Kabala-Minna road where they operated for hours breaking into people’s homes and shops.

It was reported that the terrorist groups have set up a camp at Kuchi village after ransacking some of the communities including Chibani, Injita, Tsohon-Kabula, Josso and were seen operating in other neighbouring villages of Gini and Gunu.
