Terrorists attack mining site in Niger, kidnap two Chinese, battle security operatives

The Niger State government has confirmed that terrorists/ bandits struck at a mining site at Ajata Aboki village via Erena Ward of Shiroro Local Government Area, killing unspecified number of people and kidnapping some officials working in the site including Chinese.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Emmanuel Umar, titled, “Insecurity: Terrorists attack at a mining site in Shiroro Local Government Area,” the state government said that the site was attacked on Wednesday June 29, 2022.

“Niger State government wishes to confirm that on 29/6/2022 at about 1600hrs, based on a distress call received that armed bandits /terrorists invaded a mining site located at Ajata Aboki village via Erena Ward of Shiroro LGA and a joint security team were mobilized to the scene in response to the distress call.

“Consequently, the joint security team engaged the terrorists and there were yet to be determined number of casualties from both sides.

“However, a yet to be ascertained number of workers in the mining site including two Chinese nationals were reported to have been abducted,” the government stated.

It also disclosed that the security forces, who responded swiftly, were able to neutralize some of the criminals, stressing that the manhunt of the remaining terrorists and the rescue of the injured victims including security personnel had begun.

It further confirmed that those, who sustained various degrees of injuries had been taken to a government medical facility in the state for treatment.

But, while the Police reaction on the attack is being awited, the Niger State government has commiserated with the heads of security agencies in the state and the families of the slain personnel. He assured that their sacrifices would not go in vain.

It acknowledged the efforts of the joint security operatives and that of the communities in the state towards taming the spate of insecurity in some parts of the state.

Besides, it enjoined security personnel not to be discouraged in discharging their sacred duties of protecting citizens against  all forms of threats, assuring that the government would continue to be steadfast in providing them with the needed support in all ramifications.

Also, the state governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, has directed the security agencies to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped victims and ensure that none of the terrorists escaped.
