2023: Unfolding political moves may unsettle APC in Niger

By Valentine Amanze

Visible cracks are being noticed on the walls of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State.

The possibility of the incumbent APC government succeeding itself is fading away by day due to the perceived poor governance and the high level insecurity in the state.

Already, some serving officials, who have forseen dark day ahead of the party are either realigning or making moves to join the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the rave of the moment, the Peter Obi-led Labour Party (LP).

At the weekend, the former Publicity Secretary of the APC in Niger State, Mr. Jonathan Tsado Vatsa, visited the former PDP governor, Mr. Babangida Aliyu, at his private residence in Minna.

Their close-door meeting, the first ever, was not unconnected with the 2023 electioneering and how to save the state from banditry.

The visit by Jonathan Vatsa, who is the current Coordinator, Public Affair to Governor Abubarkar Sani Bello, also raised dusts as many believed their talks, which lasted for close to two hours, included Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC presidential flagbearer, Sanator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the position of the state Christians in the unfolding political drama.

Visitors to the home of the former number one citizen in Niger State were however curious seeing, Vatsa who had also served as Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism under the current dispensation pay an unscheduled visit to his once, “political enemy’’.

Their curiosity was based on the fact that Vatsa, the then state Publicity Secretary of the APC, had been a staunch critic of former Governor Babangida Aliyu’s administration in the run off to the 2015 general election, which the ruling party eventually won.

Series of media war waged by the controversial political activist in Niger State largely contributed to the unseating of the then Babangida Aliyu-led PDP government, and the coming into power by the Abubarkar Sani Bello, who once served as Commissioner under the Aliyu administration.

When contacted, Vatsa said that the meeting was not for the next year’s general elections; but did not give further details.
