The Mazi Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called for speedy release of its detained leader, alleging that the Directorate of State Services (DSS), the secreat security agency of the government, was set to infect him, with tuberculosis.

The group accused the DSS of deliberately detaining a tuberculosis patient, who had infected many inmates, close to Kanu’s cell.

IPOB also accused the federal government of Nigeria of failed attempts to eliminate Kanu inside DSS solitary confinement.

In a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB warned that “any harm to Kanu,” would spell doom for Nigeria.

It further disclosed that the detained tuberculosis patient had already infected many detainees inside the DSS solitary confinement. DSS solitary, which is without access to sunlight and lacks proper ventilation, which makes the tuberculosis virus spread fast among the inmates.

IPOB stated: “With information available to us, many inmates have already been infected by the virus, and DSS agents are not providing medication to infected persons.  If urgent measures are not taken to avert the situation, there will be a tuberculosis pandemic in the Abuja DSS detention facility.”

Besides, it appealed to the Red Cross Society and World Health Organisation to visit the Abuja DSS facility and give independent and unbiased reports on the situation and recommendations for treatment, stressing that the Nigeria government would always deny the report until many victims of illegal detention were dead from tuberculosis infection.
