Fire destroys Ebonyi International market

Fire has destroyed properties and goods worth millions of naira at Margaret Umahi International Market, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

The fire, Nigeria News Flight gathered, began at Plot 1 section of the market around 2am on Thursday October 19, 2023.

The chairman of the Plot 1 section of the market, Mr Peter Oba, confirmed the incident.

He said that the fire started at one of the biggest warehouses containing cartons of noddles, biscuits, among other beverages.

Oba further disclosed that efforts of men of the Fire Service and other security agencies to quench the fire were futile at press time.

During a visit to the scene of the incident, many fire fighting trucks were seen trying to quench the fire while some of the affected traders were lamenting the the incident.

One of the traders, Mr Jude Okechukwu, told Nigeria News Flight that the fire has caused heavy damage and injury to the traders since all efforts to control it proved abortive.

He called on the government to come to their aid and also provide adequate security to checkmate activities in the market to avoid further occurrence.
