The Bauchi State government and development partners, WaterAids Nigeria, are set to construct user-friendly toilets in public places across the state.
This is contained in a communique signed by Mr Barde Gonsis on behalf of the government at the end of a one-day validation meeting on assessment of toilets in public places in Bauchi at the weekend.
It further disclosed that already, the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) has validated the assessment report and set to ensure that the project was implemented with the design that could be actualized and sustained in the state.
“The agency commits to support the WaterAids partnership to construct and improve public toilets in motor parks and markets through a user-centre design that will favour women, girls and persons with disabilities – an innovation to improve hygiene, sanitation and dignity of women to utilise it without difficulty,” it stated.

The communique said the validation meeting was conducted with consultants who supported the process through assessment of 54 public toilets in six local government areas of the state.
“The LGAs are Katagum, Shira, Alkaleri, Ningi, Misau and Bauchi, as part of efforts to establish a user-centered design of public toilets and end open defecation in the state,’’ it stated.
Our correspondent reports that stakeholders at the meeting were staff of BASEPA and Bauchi State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RUWASSA), people with disabilities, Civil Society Organizations, Media among others.
