The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Sunday January 14, 2024, kick-started the Nations Cup (AFCON 24) in a shaky note, drawing 1-1 with the lowly-rated Equitorial Guinea side in a Group A match they would have won convincingly in Abidjan Cote d’ Ivoire.
After soaking so much preasure from the Super Eagles in the first half, the Thunders of Equitorial Guinea through Evans Salvado struck in the 37th minute, breaking the Nigerian defence to humble Super Eagles’ goalkeeper, Nwabili.
The jubilation did not last long as Ademola Lukman located Victor Osimhem with a long pass, which the striker nodded in effortlessly in the 38th minute.

With Al-Hasan Yusuf marshaling Nigeria’s midfield, the Equitorial Guinea side was forced to remain in its half for most of the second half.
Besides missing many scoring chances, the Super Eagles showed hunger with their attacking football, while the Thunders have their goalkeeper, Owono, to thank for frustrating the Eagles’ efforts.
The Super Eagles will now play the host nation, Cote d’Ivoire (The Elephants), who defeated Guinea Bisau 2-0 in the Group A opening match on Saturday, while Equitorial Guinea will meet Guinea Bisau same day.
