‘I’m among those that are advocating for civil servants to be paid very well, so that they will be able to solve their problems’

The Deputy Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Mr. Chinedu Onah, has lamented the plight of Nigerian workers in the hash economy and called on the government to increase the salaries of civil servants and improve their welfare for more efficiency and productivity in civil service.
This followed the ongoing agitation and demand from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for the increment of workers’ salary.
Onah, who made his feelings known to newsmen in Ohaukwu council of Ebonyi State, insisted that civil servants in Nigeria deserved the best as they have contributed alot for the growth and development of Nigeria.
He said that the current salary status of civil servants in the country was not enough to meet up with the current economic challenges, especially with the hike in the prices of food items, fuel, school fees and many others.

The lawmaker said, “The federal and state governments should understand the nature of things in this country, and the workers should be treated fairly. Let them enjoy the way that politicans are enjoying.
“The salaries of civil servants should be increased. No one that is paid N30,000 or N40,000 and such person pays N100,000 for the school fees of the children, and you think that things are good for such person.
“And if he/she has two or four children in the school, you see that such person will be battling with hunger.
“I’m among those that are advocating for civil servants to be paid very well, so that they will be able to solve their problems. Things are difficult in Nigeria, and if you go outside Ebonyi, you will understand that things are difficult. You will know that we are in the paradise in Ebonyi.”
Onah, who is representing Ohaukwu South constituency, however commended the governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, for the various incentives provided for the workers in the state to cushion the effects of subsidy removal in the country.
