Bandits have takenover the Nagwamase Military Cantonment, Kontagora, Niger State –Nigeria’s largest military traning camp, and displaced 23 communities spread across two councils of Kontagora and Mariga.
Niger State House of Assembly (NSHA) raised the alarm via a motion of urgent public importance brought by the member representing Kontagora II, Hon. Abdullahi Isah, on Tuesday October 29, 2024.
While the House called for the urgent intervention of the federal and the Mohammed Bago-led state government, it did not say wether the facility was abandoned by the military before the takeover or that the bandits chased the soldiers away.
The House also lamented the rate with which the bandits had sustained their encroachments into the interior part of the state.
During his presentation, Isah lamented: “The military camp is now known to have been taken over by the terror groups who are said to have established at least eight different camps within the large land space.
The presence of the bandits on this training camp which now serves as their safe haven, is posing serious security challenges to host communities across Kontagora and Mariga local governments.
“Due to the commandeering of the military training camp, almost all the farming communities have been forced to relocate to avoid incessant attacks by the gunmen.
“I also want this Honourable House to note that communities within the training camp have in the past one month come under intense attacks by the gunmen who operate with impunity.”
