Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate in the 2023 general election

and the ex- governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, has condemned the alleged vote buying by politicians in the just concluded governorship election, which he described as “a rape on the electoral process.”

Obi, who spoke to reporters after casting his vote, alleged that votes were bought at N20,000 and N30,0000.

He however lamented that with such incidents, the socioeconomic development of the country was under threat, while appealing to voters to resist vote buying , which, he said, mortgages their future.

His words: “We see politicians buying votes of the electorates and when they give you N20,000 or N30,000, what would they do for you again?

“People should try to resist vote buying and stop mortgaging their future.

“What it means is that the future of our country is under threat and the earlier we checkmate this, the better for our country and our children’s children.”

Meanwhile, there was peaceful election at Ihiala, Ogbaru and Ayamelum local government areas against the expectations.

Police operatives and personnel of sister security agencies were on ground across polling centres, collation zones, waterways, and border communities to deter any form of disruption and to provide confidence for voters to exercise their civic responsibility without fear or intimidation.

Reacting to the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the command remained focused on ensuring a peaceful and a hitch-free process.

“The Command maintains strict neutrality and assures all political actors and citizens that it remains committed to protecting the integrity of the electoral process, safeguarding lives and property, and enforcing the law throughout the election period.

“The public is encouraged to continue to conduct themselves peacefully and comply with lawful instructions from security officers on duty” he said.
