Gov’s wife pays fine for 41 inmates to regain freedom

Ebonyi State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ben Odo, has raised alarm over involvement of women in violent crime in the state.
Odo said that
that 31 female inmates were facing capital punishment for murder at the Correctional Centre in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
Odo, who spoke to Nigeria News Flight in Abakaliki, further disclosed that the Centre had a total of 1,265 inmates out of which 31 of them were females.
Odo also lamented that none of the 31 female inmates were among the released inmates by the wife of the governor because they were facing capital offences.
He said that if convicted, they would be transferred to Enugu maximum prison, where those on death sentence are kept, awaiting execution.
His words: “We have here in the Nigerian Correctional Service Custodial Centre, Abakaliki, 1, 265 inmates.
“Out of the 1,265 inmates, 31 are female inmates; and all the female inmates have offence attached to them.
“They are charged with capital offences, murder and the matter is still ongoing in court; they have not been sentenced. This is why all the people that their fines have been paid are all male.”
Meanwhile, the wife of Ebonyi State governor, Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, on Tuesday, urged inmates, who were freed from Abakaliki Correctional Centre to shun crimes and live a better life to impact positively on the society instead of indulging in crime.

The wife of the governor had last year paid the fine for 53 inmates and this year paid another fine for 41 inmates to regain their freedom.
The wife of the governor who disclosed this at the Nigerian Correctional Service Custodial Centre, Abakaliki, tasked the inmates, more especially the female to start living a good life and avoid crime.
The freed inmates were convicted for various crimes with the option of fine.
The governor’s wife also donated cash gift to the inmates and encouraged them to desist from urgly lifestyle.
