Police have confirmed the killing of one policeman and wounding of two others by gunmen in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, on Monday night.
Though the names of their victims were not disclosed at press time, the gunmen were said to have struck the Union Bank junction police checkpoint, where a team of police officers mounted road block for stop-and-search, around 2030hrs.
It was also gathered that some of the gunmen escaped with bullet wounds.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Faleye Olaleye, who confirmed the attack in a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Onome Onovewakpoyeya, disclosed that the two injured officers were receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
He, therefore, appealed to members of the public to report anyone seen with bullet wound or soliciting for treatment elsewhere.

His words: “On the 22/05/2023 at about 2030hrs, the operatives of the Command on Stop-and-Search duty at Union Bank roundabout, the area where banks are concentrated in the state capital, engaged in a shootout with heavily armed hoodlums, whose mission wsa unknown in the area.
`Sadly, one of the operatives paid the supreme price, while two others were injured and are receiving treatment in the hospital. Also, the hoodlums equally recorded casualties but were taken away.
“The Commissioner of Police, therefore, appeals to members of the public to report anyone seen with bullet wound or soliciting for treatment for same.
“Conclusively, the c, psc enjoins members of the Public to remain calm, as measures have been emplaced to protect lives and property of the citizens and that the Command will not rest on its oars until the perpetrators are hound down.”
