Jonathan: IBB is not a sectional leader, he is somebody who believes in the unity of Nigeria

Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has described ex-Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), as among the country’s finest and committed leaders since independence.
Jonathan made the commendationduring his visit to Minna, the Niger State capital, to commemorate Babangida’s 84th birthday on Sunday August 17, 2025.
While presenting a birthday card to his host, Jonathan said that Babangida believes so much in Nigeria’s unity in diversity.
Jonathan also extolled Babangida’s other salient virtues especially during his days as president, stressing, “IBB did his best for the country as a Military Head of State – that’s why, till today, people still visit regularly.
“His house is Mecca of sorts; that tells you a lot about the character of IBB”.

The former Nigerian leader, who had a close-door meeting with IBB, said, “One thing is that General Babangida stands out very clearly as one of those committed leaders that wants the best for this country.
“He takes Nigeria, the whole country, as his own. IBB is not a sectional leader, he is somebody who believes in the unity of this country. He has his friends that cut across all the corners of this country.
“IBB is one person we will continue to celebrate.”
Jonathan however prayed God to continues to grant strength to the former leader to continue to mentor younger generations, stressing, “He has done well and we will continue to celebrate him.”
