Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, has advocated for timely referral of persisted fever cases to the Virology Centre for Lassa PCR and treatment to combate the high mobidity and mortality associated with the disease.
The commissioner made the appeal at Ochudo Centenary City Abakaliki, while hosting members of Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors, Ebonyi State branch.
Ekuma, who noted that when the necessary things had been done and the patient is not responding to treatment, they should suspect Lasa fever, adding that the earliest stage of the disease comes with malaria symptoms.
The medical expert disclosed that the process of establishing a medical laboratory directorate domiciled in the Ministry has commenced and asked them to bring the guidelines for its setup.
He commended the Governor, His Excellency, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, and his wife, Mrs. MaryMaudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru for their interest in the health sector, which has improved healthcare delivery in the state.

The Chairman, Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors, Ebonyi State Branch, MLS Eluu Aloysius, had mentioned the achievements of the Commissioner to include establishment of the drug revolving fund and drug revolving Agency as well as constant provision of disposables in the general hospitals among others.
While he requested for full integration of the Guild in the registration, inspection and renewal of medical laboratories, he appealed to the Commissioner to save them from multiple and over taxation by different groups in the state which he said has hampered the smooth running of their outfits.
In another development, the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma received in audience delegates from 13 Local Government Areas who represented the State at National Health Fellows Programme, Abuja.
He congratulated them for the training which metamorphosed into their employment and enjoined them to implement what they learnt to ensure better health of the people
The Health boss poured encomiums on the Ebonyi State Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for providing enabling environment for them to travel and the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the automatic employment given to them.
On behalf of other beneficiaries, Mr. Eche Paul extolled the Commissioner for being the brain behind the journey and said that they came to formally inform him of their arrival and solicited for his support to enable them to do the program as expected.
In a vote of thanks, the Coordinator, National Health Fellows Programme, Dr. Mrs. Odii Okoro, who represented the Commissioner at the event, was full of gratitude to him for making sure that one person was selected from each Local Government Area adding that the state was well represented.
