Guardiola loses to Amorim again

Manchester United have compounded Pep Guardiola’s woes by beating Manchester City 2-1 in the Manchester derby played at Etihad Stadium on Sunday December 15, 2024.

Manchester City headed into the clash on the back of just one win in their last 10 matches in all competitions and with their chances of winning a fifth successive Premier League title in serious peril.  Now, it is one win in Manchester City’s last 11 matches.

Josko Gvardiol scored for City in the 42nd minute via a corner kick, as the two struggling Premier League clubs ended the first half, with host, City, having upper hand.

The secod half started with a banger as Manchester United, whose new coach, Ruben Amorim, had earlier defeated Guardiola 4-1 in the Champions League, dominated the game, pushing City inside their own half.

The preasure paid-off in the 88th minute, when City goalkeeper, Ederson, pulled down the impressive Manchester United attacker, Amad Diallo, inside the 18 yard box.

Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, converted the rsultant penalty. Amad made it double in the 90th munite after an assist from Martinez.

Meanwhile, United made the trip to Etihad without Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford after Manchester lost their last two Premier League matches to Arsenal and Nothingham Forest.

Before the derby on Sunday, City were fifth in the table and sat nine points behind Liverpool, while United were 13th having taken 19 points from their opening 15 league games.

Recall that Amorim masterminded a 4-1 win over Guardiola’s City while he was Sporting CP manager recently.
