The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger State has described the November 1, 2025 council election as a show of shame and mockery of democracy.
It also said that the exercise was rigged in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
In a statement issued by the state Chairman, Aliyu Mohammed Halidu, PDP accused the ruling party of forcefully holding unto powerm alleging that APC can only win election through its mantra, “Grab it, snatch it, and run with it.”
Niger State PDP Chairman, Aliyu Mohammed Halidu, was reacting to the recently conducted local government election in the state.
Halidu, who spoke in Minna, described the LG poll as mere formalities to deceive and divert attention by the ruling party.
His words: “We members of the PDP in Niger State unequivocally condemn the reckless impunity, abuse of power and blatant compromises exhibited by the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission on November 1, 2025.
“The PDP in Niger State rejects in totality the so called local government election and will not recognize it as free, fair or credible democracy process.

“It is a disgrace to democracy, a flagrant disenfranchisement to the people of Niger state.”
The state PDP Chairman, who was also a National Assembly member in 1992 and 93, said the entire process was characterised by total disregard for due process and the law by the electoral umpire and its paid agents.
He lamented that over 50 percent of voting population in Niger state were denied their constitutional rights to vote as the electoral body deliberately under-supplied ballot papers and other sensitive materials in vertualy all the polling units across the 25 LGCs.
