Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has appeal to the Nigerian government to prioritise education in its development agenda.

Dogara, who made the appeal at the 50th anniversary of Nakam Memorial School in Plateau State, described education as the driving force behind any meaningful national development.

“Without education, our infrastructure will decay.

“We need educated minds to maintain and innovate,” he said.

He cited Kenya’s higher budget despite fewer resources, attributing it to Kenya’s emphasis on education.

“Nigeria’s education sector faces significant challenges, including inadequate funding and poor infrastructure.

“In 2019, the government expenditure on education as a percentage of GDP was 0.8%.

“This is below the recommended threshold for developing countries,” he lamented.

Besides, Dogara urged the government to increase investment in education, while appealing to the private institutions and individuals to support education initiatives.

“By prioritizing education, Nigeria can unlock its economic potential and achieve sustainable development,” Dogara said.
