Police confirm killing of Ebonyi monarch

‘This is a great loss to the community and Akaeze at large because he was a man of integrity; very difficult to replace’

Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of the monarch of Umuihe autonomous community, Akaeze in Ivo Local Government Area, His Royal Highness, Umazi Ibo Ubani, over the weekend by unidentified gunmen.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, who made the disclosure to the media in Abakaliki, explained that the traditional ruler was killed around 10:00pm on Friday May 3, 2024.

He also said that investigation into the killing had commenced to unravel those behind the attack.

“Our men got distress call and they responded immediately the got the information. Unfortunately, when they got there, the did had been done.

“We are already devicing method to track down the perpetrators. And investigation has commenced. There was no property damaged during the attack.

“The incident happened around 10:00pm last week Friday May 3, 2024,” he said.

It was gathered that the gunmen at the weekend invaded Umuihe autonomous community, Akaeze in Ivo local government area of Ebonyi State, killing the traditional ruler of the community, His Royal Highness, Umazi Ibo Ubani.

Nigeria News Flight gathered that there was exchange of heavy gunfire during the attack that claimed the monarch’s life.

The Coordinator of Akaeze Development Centre, Hon. Chinasa Okorie, condemned the killing of the monarch, stressing that it will be very difficult to get a traditional ruler of his kind in the area looking at his good anticidents.

“Around 10pm last Friday, I received a call that there was shooting in the house of our traditional ruler, that after the shooting, it was discovered that our traditional ruler had been killed and that is the traditional ruler of Umuihe Autonomous Community, Akaeze, HRH Eze Umazi Ibo Ubani.

“This is a great loss to the community and Akaeze at large because he is a man of integrity, a man that would be difficult to replace because he is intelligent, bold and fearless.

“The man [monarch] does not know corruption. At all times, his integrity is always seen. I am very sad about his killing. It is a great loss to Akaeze Development Centre, where I am the leader, Ivo local government, and Ebonyi State.”
