Police confirm women protest in Ebonyi, to go after sponsors

 

‘The protest was carried out by women and it was intended for seven days; it had to do with herdsmen killing in the place’

The Ebonyi State Police command has confirmed the destruction of property in the state by women protesting the killing of a youngman by herdsmen at Ishiagu in Ivo Local Government Area of the state.

 

It also assured that it would soon invite the sponsors of the protest which rocked, and led to blocked of major roads with burnt tyres, and destruction of vehicles in the area.

 

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Onome Onovewakpoyeya, disclosed that the incident was reported yesterday around 11:00am.

 

She said that the women took the protest, which was planned to last for seven days, to the residences of their traditional ruler, commissioner for Information and council chairman, where they destroyed luvers, vehicles, flowers, among others to express their grievances.

Her words: “The protest was carried out by women and it was intended for seven days; it had to do with herdsmen killing in the place that somebody died recently and the women were not happy and had to come out and blocked some of the roads, burnt tyres. Then, they went to the resident of the traditional ruler there; then commissioner for Information is from the place too and the council chairman.

 

“They didn’t burn their houses, they destroyed windscreen of vehicles that were packed there; destroyed flowers; destroyed luvers, but they didn’t burn any house there until Police Tactical Team were deployed there and they were asked to eschew violence and those who actually spearheaded the protest, had been identified for invitation by the police.

 

“They said they have hunters that were attacked by the herdsmen in the bush. Our attention was called about the protest yesterday around 11:00am.”
