Two Super Eagles of Nigeria silver winners in the just concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey, reproduced their AFCON scintillating form at the weekend, scoring the two goals that gave Fulham all the three points in the Premier League match played at the Old Trafford.

Their efforts made Manchester United to suffer their 15th defeat of the season in all competitions.

The result was also Fulham’s second win at the Theatre of Dreams since 1963.

Alex Iwobi snatched the points for the Marco Silva-led Cottagers in the seventh minute of stoppage time, while the former Rangers and Ajax defender, Calvin Bassey, thumped the London club into the lead before Harry Maguire of Manchester United followed up Bruno Fernandes’ effort after Bernd Leno of Fulham parried the tame effort.

The defeat saw United miss the opportunity to make ground up on Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Europe.

A win would have taken them to within a point of Spurs, who were not in action this week due to Chelsea’s participation in the Carabao Cup final.

United will be wanting to bounce back quickly and have the opportunity to do so against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Wednesday.

Their next encounter in the English top flight is a big one as they make the short trip to rivals, Manchester City, on Sunday.
