Gunmen raid Owerri

The peaceful atmosphere in Owerri, the Imo State capital, is being disrupted by yet-to-be identified criminals, who have besieged the city for the past four days.
Their first attack was in Irete, the outskirts of Owerri, at the weekend, where they killed three policemen and a POS operator.
The gunmen again struck at Orji, near Imo State University, on Tuesday July 30, 22024, killing a young busineesman before escaping through Orji junction, where they shot sporadically scaring people.
While the response of the Police is being awaited, the Civil Defence on Wednesday July 31, 2024, ordered traders in Owerri town, especially thos along the roads, to close shop for safety.
The order came on the heels of the heavy shooting at Orji junction, which crippled businesses in the area on Wednesday morning.

Eyewitness told Nigeria News Flight that immediately the gunshots stopped security men where seen in thier van parading the area.
Meanwhile, as at 12.06pm, vehicular movements resumed, as people were seen in groups at Orji junction diecusing the urgly incident.
A source, who spoke ananymously, blamed the security network in Imo State for the insecurity.
The source allaged that the security officials in the state were only interested in mounting roadblocks and extorting passengers, while criminals raid the town.
