Two-storey building collapses in Ebonyi, injures two people

A two-storey building under construction has collapsed in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, injuring two labourers who were working in the site.

 The building, which belongs to the member of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Ukie Ezeali, representing Afikpo North East constituency, caved in on Tuesday June 18, 2024.

Ezeali is also a former Commissioner on Project Monitoring and Evaluation.

The building, which collapsed on Tuesday evening, shares boundary with the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

Nigeria News Flight gathered that the two injured workers were trapped inside the building before they were rescued and taken to the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

One of the survivors,who is receiving treatment at AE-FETHA, Mr. Celestine Alua, narrated: “I was inside the building when it colasped. Building construction started over three months ago. From my observation, they bought normal size of rod but I don’t know what actually caused the colasped.

“I am a laborer, and we were doing our work when it colasped and trapped us.”

All efforts to reach the lawmaker, Ezeali, for reaction, at the time of filing this report proved abortive, and he didn’t pick calls placed to his phone.
