Igbo group, the Igbo Renaissance Forum (IRF), has expressesed disappointment in the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun’s opposition to the establishment of state police.

The group said that the IGP’s objection was a reflection of a deep-seated reluctance to embrace change in Nigeria’s policing architecture.

IRF made the disclosure in a statement issued by its International Coordinator, Nze Ugo-Akpe Onwuka (Oyi), on April 23, 2024.

The group also called for the restructuring of Nigeria to bring peace to citizens.

IRF stated: “While his concerns might be valid, they do not outweigh the urgent need for a restructuring of Nigeria’s policing system.

“The argument that Nigeria is not ripe for state police overlooks the fact that the current centralized system has failed to adequately address the country’s diverse security challenges.

“Localized policing would not only be more effective in combating crime but also foster a sense of ownership and accountability within communities.

“Nigeria’s security landscape is multifaceted, with different regions grappling with unique threats. A centralized police force struggles to effectively and efficiently combat these varied challenges.”valoa2000@yahoo.com
