NYG: Niger sponsors 134 athletes, snubs SWAN

One hundred and thirty-four (135) persons are to defend Niger State at the National Youth Games (NYG) hosted by Delta State in Asaba, the state capital, between September 9 and 19, 2024.

The contingent of 134, including officials, would feature in 17 events through the 10-day sporting tournament.

Niger State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Alhaji Yahaya Ibrahim Gulbin-Boka, who disclosed this newsmen, expressed optimism that the outing would be rewarding.

“The governor has approved substantial amount of money for the trip”, he said.

While commending the state Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for approving “substantial amount of money” for the NYG, the commissioner declared that members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) would not be carried along.

The commissioner, who had mandated the Permanent Secretary, Nuhu Garba Nganski, and the Director of Sports, Alhaji Habibu Abdullahi Sheshi, to speak on the sporting outing, respectively, however declared that SWAN was not part of their arrangements for the ‘Asaba 2024’ national sporting fiesta.

The permanent secretary who refused to disclose the exact sum approved by the Governor for the state’s participation in the sporting fiesta, simply told our correspondent that the Governor approved “Substantial amount of money”.

Also, when asked if Sports Writers were included in their arrangements or if they would be given some slots to be part of the state contingent, the Director who was directed to provide answers to inquiries from SWAN simply said, No!

Meanwhile, Niger State would compete in 17 sporting events including; Taekwondo, Basketball, Tennis, Hokey and Squash.

Others included; Judo, Badminton, Weightlifting, Wrestling and athletics.
