Amunike: I am operating at different level with Finidi

By Valentine Amanze

The U-17 World Cup-winning coach and Nigeria’s ex-international, Mr. Emmanuel Amunike, has assured the newly appointed Super Eagles Chief Coach, George Finidi, of his assistance if he asks for it as a friend and not to work under him.

Amunike made the clarification in Brila FM Lagos programme anchord by ex-international, Ifeanyi Udeze, on Wednesday May 1, 2024.

The former Bacelona FC of Spain attacker also congratulated his former teammate in the 1994 Nations Cup winning Super Eagles, Finidi, for his new job.

He said that Finidi was qualified for the job with his experience as an international footballer and a coach of Enyimba of Aba FC.

Amunike, who said that he was operating at different level with Finidi, assured that the Super Eagles players would respect the new chief coach, stressing, “After all, they are all professionals.”

Amunike, who was the first manager to qualify Tanzania for Nations Cup, said that Finidi, as an indigenous coach, would qualify Nigeria for the next edition of World Cup.

Also, another ex-international, Obinna Nsofor, who resides in Italy, corroborated Amunike’s views on Finidi.

Nsofor, who played under Samson Siasia, commended the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for giving the job to Finidi having understudied José Peseiro, the immediate past manager, for 18 months.

The programme anchor, Udeze aka Man Wey Sabi, expressed joy that an indigenous coach was offered the opportunity again to manage the national team.

He however wondered why the NFF did not come out with the contract details including names of those to work with Finidi.

Udeze pointed out that when Super Eagles ex-keeper, Ike Shorunmu, was picked by NFF as goalkeeper trainer without engagement letter, he was sacked without pay for asking for the letter.

He called on the NFF to tidy up Finidi’s engagement and make it public.
