Bandits raid Niger, takeover communities

‘A total of 26 persons have so far been abducted or are missing; seven others lost their lives as the armed bandits have renewed their onslaught against the local government in the last five days

Armed bandits have taken over communities in Mashegu Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, burning houses, kidnapping for ransome, kill, rape woman and girls.

The Chairman, Mashegu Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, Alhaji Umar Jibrin Igede, disclosed that the armed men who operate unchallenged, had taken over not less than eight communities including; Kulho, Sahon-Rami, and Tashan Hajiya.

 Igede disclosed this while briefing journalists on the security situation in the area for the past two weeks.

He said that about seven of the communities had been deserted due to incessant attacks, forcing the villagers to refuge at the Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs) camp.

His words: “Some communities in Mashegu have been taken over by armed bandits for close to two weeks now and most of the villagers in the affected communities have relocated to the IDP camp in Kontagora. We are pleading for the intervention of the relevant authorities”.

Describing the situation in the area as ‘‘very pathetic’’, the chairman said, “A total of 26 persons has so far been abducted or are missing; seven others lost their lives as the armed bandits have renewed their onslaught against the local government in the last five days”.

The security situation in the area is getting out of hand and a security threat to the villagers, adding, “The attacks are becoming more frequent and unbearable, hence, we need assistance from the relevant security agencies to come to our rescue”.

On Friday, March 31, 2023, some gang of heavily armed men attacked some communities in Munya Local Government Area, killing six persons and abducting 14 others mostly women.

 The armed bandits also laid ambushed on a joint team of Vigilante and security operatives and two of the vigilante groups lost their lives during a gun duel while several others, including the armed bandits escaped into the nearby forest with bullet wounds.

Meanwhile, the police command in Niger State is yet to comment on the takeover of the communities by bandits.
