Murder of village head: Niger govt imposes curfew in Lambata

The Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, has announced a dusk to dawn curfew to checkmate escalating crisis that led to the murder of the village Head of the Lambata community, Mohammed Abdulsafur.

Also, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State chapter, has condemned the murder in the early hours of Sunday of Rev, Fr. Isaac Achi, who was set ablaze in his home by armed bandits.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, stated that the death of the village head was sad.

He said, “In view of this, the governor has directed that curfew be imposed in Lambata town from 6:00pm to 6:00am beginning from Sunday January 15, 2023 till further notice”.

The imposition of the curfew in Lambata, the SSG explained, had become necessary as such action was to assist security agencies in bringing the already tensed situation under control to safeguard lives and properties and as well restore law and order in the affected areas.

“Niger State government condemns in strong terms the violence clash and acts of lawlessness that erupted in Lambata town which led to the murder of the village head”, the statement signed by the Information Officer, Lawal Tanko, further indicated.

While calling on the residents to remain calm and to cooperate with the security agencies in the task of ensuring that peace and normalcy return to Lambata and environs, the statement enjoined security agencies to ensure enforcement of the dusk to dawn curfew.

In a related development, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State chapter, has condemned the gruesome killing of the Catholic Priest of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kaffin-Koro, Rev Fr. Isaac Achi.

The state CAN Chairman, Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, stateed that it was ungodly for anyone to take the life of another under whatsoever guise and expressed his heart-felt condolences with the Catholic Diocese of Minna, Parishioners and also entire Christians.
