Police arrest kidnap suspect, fake doctor in Niger

Niger State police command has arrested one, Chinedu Makata (m) aged 34 from Enugu State for unlawful possession of firearms in Bangi, Mariga Local Government Area of the state.

Also arrested by the police attached to the Intelligence Unit of the Command is Clement Joseph (m) aged 24 of Koropka area of Chanchaga Local Government Area (Minna metropolis), who claimed to be a medical doctor.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, DSP Wasiu A. Abiodun, for the state Commissioner of Police, Chinedu was also in possession of 47 wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp when the police raided his shop.

While trying to arrest him, Chinedu according to the statement, pulled out a locally made gun and threatened to fire the police operatives but was overpowered and disarmed.

The suspect confessed to the crime including unlawful carnal knowledge of four female victims. He also acknowledged that he impregnated one and also conspired with one Aliyu, presently at large, and aborted a pregnancy of one other victim.

Also based on intelligence, Police Operatives attached to Lapai Division arrested one Shehu Baidu (m) aged 18 of Kango Lapai, suspected to be a member of a kidnap syndicate terrorizing Gurara, Lapai and environs.

On interrogations, the suspect confessed that between May, 2021 and August, 2022 he had conspired with the following gang members; Mamman Mallam, Sidi, Buba, Shehu, Abubakar, Kura-Kura and Chede – all male of no fixed addresses and invaded some neighbouring communities.

The gang, according to the statement, operates with three AK47 rifles.

Among the communities invaded are; Gurara Dam Site and Maijaki village, where they kidnapped 10 victims while N2.6 million was collected by the syndicate as ransom before their release.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command CP Ogundele J. Ayodeji, has reassured Nigerlites that the Command would continue to intensify efforts at reducing crime and criminalities.
